Understanding the Industry
On a development board: what happens next
What being developed by an agency means, what they'll ask of you, and what to do if it doesn't go further.
In short: If an agency has taken you on to develop, you're being tested and guided while they work out where you fit. Nothing is guaranteed, nothing should cost you money upfront, and the work is simple: clean digitals, strong tests and turning up ready to learn.
What development means
An agency has seen potential and taken you on to develop. The names vary: some agencies call this Development, some call it New Faces, and some run both, with Development first. What matters is the same everywhere: you're represented, but not established yet.
What the agency is looking for
They're working out where you fit: which kind of work suits your look, how you are on set, and whether clients respond. It's a period of finding out, for them and for you.
What they'll usually ask of you
Up-to-date digitals, accurate measurements, and test shoots, often with photographers they suggest. Keep your measurements current, and tell your booker if anything changes, including your hair. There's a guide to measuring yourself.
Money
A legitimate agency earns from commission on paid work. If anyone asks you for money upfront as a condition of joining, for a portfolio, a website listing or classes, read Is This Legitimate? before you pay anything.
If you're 16 or 17
Agencies often take on development models while they're still at school. For sessions here, you're welcome to book, with someone aged 21 or over with you for the whole session.
How long it lasts
There's no set length. It depends on the agency and on how clients respond. No timeline is promised, and it's fine to ask your booker what they're hoping to see.
If it doesn't go further
Some people move on to New Faces or the main board, and some don't. That says more about what one agency needs right now than about you. Your images and your experience still count, with other agencies or working freelance.
